The family of Patriot John Simon Linder arrived in the Colonies from Germany early in the 1700’s.

John was born in 1754 in Frederick County, Virginia. He was drafted as a Militia Man in Rockingham County, North Carolina in July of 1779 and continued service for three years; serving under Captain Owens in the infantry. John was married first to Mary Musgrave and later to Jane Wright. Together these marriages produced seventeen children.

His wife recalled that he had been present during the capture of Appomattox and surrender of Lord Cornwallis. (Yes, there was an Appomattox River Battle during the Revolutionary War. In 1781 British General Wm. Phillips attempted to cut Colonial supply lines near Petersburg, Virginia and the American army, under Baron von Steuben and Muhlenberg, managed to stop him.)

John’s death was recorded in 1834 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
